Simple Valentine Poms

Use your leftover red and white tissue paper from the Christmas holiday to create this fantastic addition to your festive Valentine decor.

Throw in some pink, purple, or heart patterned tissue paper and you have a variety of possible combinations to express your creative flair.

This simple project is even easy enough for children!

My three oldest kids (ages 6, 9, and 10.5) were able to make these poms with only a few verbal instructions. I was quite impressed with their finished products.

I love these tissue poms because they are kid friendly, inexpensive, simple, and high impact.

How to make your Valentine Poms
You will need: Tissue Paper, scissors, and string.

1. Stack 8-12 sheets of tissue paper and cut to a square shape. The size square is entirely a matter of preference. The larger the square, the larger the pom--and visa versa.

Tip: My daughter found that if she folded a corner of the tissue paper layers over to her desired size, she could cut along the two sides of the folded triangle to form a perfect square when unfolded.

2. Accordion fold your tissue layers, as if you were making a paper fan.

3. Pinch the center of the folded tissue paper and use the string to tie a knot around the middle to hold the folds in place. Be sure to keep your string long as it will also be used to hang your pom later. We like to use fishing line because it is invisible and gives the tissue poms the illusion of floating. You can also use floral/craft wire, bending the excess to make a loop to hang the pom from.

4. If you want to vary the look of the outside edge of your pom, experiment with snipping the two short ends of the folded tissue strip. You can curve the ends, cut a triangle into them, or a random zig zag. Whatever you choose.

5. Beginning at the center, carefully pull apart the individual sheets of tissue paper on each side of the knotted string.

Halfway through, turn your pom over and pull the tissue sheets apart in the other direction. This will transform your tissue paper into a spectacular three dimensional sphere!

6. Use the excess string to hang your festive pom. Group multiple poms of various sizes at various heights and you have yourself a fantastic display of Valentine decor!
